Why Is Keyword Research Important For SEO?

Keyword research is one important role in great SEO practices it helps you understand how and why people come to your website, how many competitors you have, and generally how often your audience searches that keyword online.

People search for words or phrases to solve a problem search engines return pages based on their algorithms which are the best results for those keywords or phrases to solve their problems.

Note the importance of what is stated above the search engines return pages related to the keyword or keyword phrases bases on the algorithms that will solve the searcher’s problem. Not the whole website!

In order for your to build content that will best serve the needs of your audience providing the information they are searching for and solving the problem analyzing keywords/phrases and identifying how they word them is instrumental to ranking in the search engines.

Ranking for keywords on any given page can rank for thousands of variations of keywords, therefore keyword research will dictate SEO strategy and content creation on every new page you build.

Analysis of each of the variations of keywords and knowing which ones to use can take your rankings from mediocre to the first page if you know what your doing.

Keyword Research and Traffic

Organic traffic (free traffic) does not happen by accident it is a result of a real person typing the same keywords into Google you researched and finding your page (typically the first or second result) on the first page.

You want to rank for the keywords that are going to drive qualified traffic to your page the people that are already in the mid set of making that purchase from you. Ranking for just any keyword is not going to produce the proper traffic to your site and this will impact your business.

Furthermore, no two people think alike and will use a different set of keywords to search for the same product or service that you or another content writer would not think about.

Using the information captured by the SEO specialists and published in the keyword research tools will help you identify these “hidden” terms and ensure you are not missing opportunities to show up when your customers are looking for you.

What are Keyword Attributes?

Finding the right keywords for your website to rank high on the search engines it is important that you understand the metrics associated with keyword analysis.

All website owners should build a list of seed keywords providing the baseline for keyword research, analyzing them in regard to th following attributes:

  • Keyword type
  • Searcher intent
  • Search volume
  • Keyword difficulty or competition
  • Associated SERP features

The above factors influences the search opportunity associated with any given keyword.

There are three different types of keywords, making it important to understand which type of keyword you are targeting each one serves a different purpose. You have head, body, and long-tail keywords so what does this mean?

HEAD KEYWORDS ARE:

  • Single word
  • Top of the sales funnel
  • Low conversion rate
  • High volume
  • High competition

BODY KEYWORDS ARE:

  • 2-3 words
  • Middle of the sales funnel
  • Mid-level conversion rate
  • Medium volume
  • Moderate difficulty

LONG-TAIL KEYWORDS ARE:

  • 4+ words
  • Bottom of the sales funnel
  • High conversion rate
  • Low volume
  • Low difficulty

Because each type of keyword fits into a different part of the sales funnel this should be a part of your SEO keyword research strategy.

Searcher Intent and Keywords

What does searcher intent have to do with keywords and keyword research? There are four categories that you can look at why people are searching the internet and what their intended goal is for the search.

  • Informational – To find specific information or answers to the question or problem needing solved.
  • Commercial – Looking for information on a product or service comparison shopping not directly looking to buy.
  • Navigational – Looking for a brand, product, or service which is a particular website or how to page.
  • Transactional – Searches that are directly associated with intent on purchasing a product or service.

If you are looking to rank in organic search results you need to determine what type of traffic you are capturing with the keywords used in your content, using the proper keywords for searcher intent will have an impact on your business.

Starting Your Keyword Research

Now that we have covered the attributes of keyword research and why we need to analyze them how do we begin to start collecting and doing the SEO research on the keywords.

We begin by looking at our website and evaluating the keywords that we are already ranking for by analyzing what is already successful this provides us with a point of reference for the future success of potential opportunities.

By knowing where the website is currently performing this can help set realistic and achievable goals, if already ranking for the majority of keywords for the product or service then you know when you stand in the market.

But if you are not ranked at all for any of the keywords then you are completely invisible in the search engines, if some pages are ranked they might not be ranked high enough to produce organic traffic meaning you are somewhere in the middle.

Starting with Google Search Console and looking at your websites search performance would be the first place you should go to find out how well your keyword research is doing.

Taking all of your keywords into account that are on your website and finding the ones that are ranking and the ones that are not will identify missed opportunities which are throwing you off on relevant keywords that you can get ranked with.

With all the information that you are able to gather from the Google Search Console such as queries that drive the most clicks to your website, pages ranking for specific queries, average search position for pages, average click through rate (CTR), and what devices people are searching from can lead you to the beginning of your seed keyword list.

Make a List Of Seed Keywords

Now that you have a full understanding of how your website is currently performing you can begin to make a list of potential seed keywords and keyword phrases to change your rank to where you want it to be.

Remember you need to be as complete and thorough as possible compiling keywords and keyword phrases use your competition and examine how they used terms and with what intent analyze how to rephrase the wording and research this.

Consider all the words associated with the product and/or service try exploring related search terms on Google, always start with your main keyword and build out from it try all possible formulas.

Next, you need to check to see how each of the keywords/keyword phrases ranks to eliminate those that are not going to help you move up in the SERP’s.

How to determine which keyword is going to get you the best ranking and using a keyword research tool such as Jaaxy can help you decide what one will rank the best.

For this you are going to have three categories to place your seed keywords into High-Opportunity keywords, Medium-Opporturnity keywords, and Low-Opportunity keywords.

Looking at these three categories which one would you select your keywords from?

High-Opportunity keywords

  • Long-tail or body keywords
  • Informational, commercial, or transactional intent
  • Low to medium competition
  • Medium to high search volume

Medium-Opportunity keywords

  • Body keywords
  • Informational or commercial intent
  • Medium competition
  • Low to medium search volume

Low-Opportunity keywords

  • Head keywords
  • Informational or navigational intent
  • High competition
  • Medium search volume

Exactly my choice, low-volume keywords that provide the opportunity to rank quickly and start earning traffic over the medium and high keywords that any beginner or even someone who has been around for a year cannot compete with.

Taking all your keywords and listing them by this ranking method will afford you the best opportunity to earn more organic traffic and can offer the least path of resistance for the product or service you are trying to promote.

Additional Factors To Consider

Search Volume

Search volume is reported as a monthly volume and is the number of times people have used that exact keyword/keyword phrase on Google.

This figure tells you the traffic potential you can expect for any given keyword/keyword phrase should you rank with Google on the first page and above the fold (meaning on the screen) as searches look for that exact wording.

Pages can rank for multiple keywords and keyword variations so the actual traffic can potential be much higher than the search volume that is shown in the keyword research tools.

Keyword Difficulty

Understanding keyword difficulty is your most important metric for keyword analysis with it you can find your competition levels. Major brands are something that you are never going to be able to compete with no sense in trying.

When you try to compete in the ultra competitive keywords associated within your niche then you are looking at investing in paid advertising in order to rank getting organic traffic is not going to be likely.

You can find the potential to rank quickly and much easier when you identity low difficulty keywords for your pages and using all the research tools and calculating with SEO tools and manual review of search results of the pages that are ranked now.

SERP (Search Engine Results)

Using the Search engine results page (SERP) features need to a consideration during keyword analysis because they provide you with how to structure, formatting, and design your pages in order to outrank the competition.

In order to out rank your competition for a particular keyword (phrase) looking to see what features they are using can empower you to optimize your content and take control of the prominent rank in the SERP’s.

What potential SERP features are we talking about here?

The first thing you see upon looking in the SERPs are videos and images that correspond to your keyword search means you are going to need to embed videos and images or both into your content in order to compete.

Should your target keyword return a rich snippet at the top of the SERP’s, then know that your page must provide a quick, concise answer to serve the intent of that keyword.

We all know that search results continue to evolve understanding which SERP features are associated with your keywords are the only way to keep ahead of the competition.

In Closing

This is a fairly long article on keyword research and until people realize how important this is to ranking then I am sure there is going to be many more articles going to be written with even more advice on how and why to do keyword research.

For today if you just have a take away of the importance of doing the keyword research for all your content on the website in the most complete way possible then it is going to help you rank faster and end up with organic traffic for your site.

Just using a keyword research tool is not going to get you rankings and why spend extra for something that you can do for free with some time spent in learning analysis the right way?

Checking out your competition even with the high-opportunity keywords is still the best way to evaluate how you are going to out rank them in the SERP’s.

Hoping you found some useful knowledge here today and I love hearing any comments, suggestions, or questions that my readers have please leave them in the space provided below, I do reply to them all.

Thank you and best of luck with your keyword research in the future,
